Keir Starmer has unveiled a new funding initiative aimed at enhancing security at mosques following a recent suspected arson incident at one of the religious centers he visited.
The government has pledged approximately £10 million to support mosques and Muslim faith establishments in safeguarding themselves against hate crimes and attacks. This funding injection will assist in implementing various security measures such as CCTV installation, alarm systems, secure fencing, and security personnel.
The announcement coincided with Starmer’s visit to the Peacehaven mosque in East Sussex, which he described as a “humbling” experience. Following the fire that caused damage to the mosque’s front entrance and a vehicle on October 4, Sussex Police disclosed the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life in connection with the incident.
Starmer emphasized, “Britain is a proud and tolerant country. Attacks on any community are attacks on our entire nation and our values. This funding will offer Muslim communities the necessary protection to live in peace and safety.”
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also condemned the attack on the Peacehaven Mosque, highlighting the importance of defending the right to practice one’s faith without fear. Mahmood urged unity against those who aim to sow division through violence and intimidation.
Akeela Ahmed, CEO of the British Muslim Trust, welcomed the funding, emphasizing the significance of religious freedom in British society. She expressed concern over the rising fear and intimidation experienced by many in the Muslim community due to attacks on mosques, disrupting spaces meant for faith, love, and peace.
