The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in almost 250 postcode areas across England and Wales today.
This move coincides with the issuance of numerous winter weather warnings by the Met Office for the upcoming week. More than 500,000 households are set to benefit from these payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.
Today, the new payments have been initiated in a total of 246 postcode areas, encompassing regions such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and sections of Wales and Northern Ireland.
The list of postcodes eligible for these payments has been released, allowing residents to check for their specific area on an interactive map provided.
Cold Weather Payments are disbursed to individuals in England and Wales who are recipients of various benefits. While a similar scheme operates in Northern Ireland, in Scotland, support for heating bills is provided annually and is not tied to specific cold weather periods.
During this winter season, £25 payments have been activated for 697 postcode areas, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to extended cold conditions lasting two weeks in those locations.
The latest round of payments is expected to reach approximately 532,000 households, with a significant portion, around 336,000, located in Greater Manchester. The total expenditure for the Cold Weather Payments activated today is projected to be £13.3 million.
In England and Wales, a payment is triggered when an area is forecasted to have average temperatures below zero for seven consecutive days. Weather forecasters are anticipating a cold spell leading into the New Year, with subzero temperatures anticipated in numerous regions.
An estimated 3.9 million individuals qualify for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million of them currently receiving Pensions Credit.
To be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment, individuals must be claiming benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest. However, not all recipients of these benefits automatically receive the Cold Weather Payment, as eligibility depends on specific criteria outlined on the GOV.UK website.
The £25 payments are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, identified with a payment reference including the recipient’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. No application is required for this payment.
