Richard Hammond has implied that his wife Amanda ‘Mindy’ Hammond played a significant role in his recovery from a coma. The 55-year-old presenter disclosed that he and columnist Mindy, aged 59, made the decision to separate after nearly thirty years of marriage earlier this year.
In a joint statement they issued, they confirmed the end of their marriage. Their relationship had been under public scrutiny, especially following his involvement in a car crash while filming Top Gear in 2006.
Richard sustained a brain injury and was in a coma in intensive care for multiple weeks. Now, he has publicly discussed their split for the first time, likening the divorce to his crash.
During an interview with the Daily Mail, he expressed, “Whatever happens to us, we can decide. Maybe not in the moment. I didn’t decide, as the car was going over at 320mph ‘I’m going to make this a good thing’, but there came a moment when I thought, ‘right, my reaction to this is going to be positive.”
Richard previously suggested that Mindy’s presence and support at his bedside may have contributed to his awakening from the coma.
Reflecting on this period, he shared in a YouTube video posted in 2022 about his dreams while in the coma. He recounted a vivid dream he had while under the influence of morphine towards the end of his coma, describing it as a walk in the Lake District.
In his dream, he walked up a hillside towards a tree, where he sensed impending trouble. As the feeling intensified, he turned back in his dream and subsequently woke up from the coma.
Richard later revealed that he recounted this dream to Mindy after emerging from the coma, and she shared her perspective. He narrated how Mindy was informed of the grim situation in intensive care, prompting her to shout at him fervently, urging him not to give up, which coincided with his dream turning point and awakening.
The couple announced their separation in a joint statement, expressing gratitude for their 28-year journey together and the two daughters they share. They emphasized that while their marriage is concluding, they remain a family structured differently, with mutual respect and privacy.
