Pharmacists are witnessing an increase in individuals expressing reluctance towards receiving vaccinations following remarks by Donald Trump linking “pills and vaccines” to a supposed rise in autism. The US President’s unsupported statements during a recent press conference in the Oval Office have drawn criticism from medical professionals and the scientific community. Trump advised pregnant women to avoid taking paracetamol, suggesting a potential link to autism in babies.

In response, the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has affirmed support for NHS guidelines recommending paracetamol as the safest option for pain and high fever, which if untreated, could elevate the risk of birth defects. A rapid survey conducted by the NPA at 500 pharmacies revealed that 32% of patients had expressed reduced willingness to receive vaccinations, influenced by Trump’s comments.

The survey also indicated that 24% of patients questioned the safety of paracetamol, raising concerns among pharmacists about potential risks to patient safety in Britain due to the ongoing debate surrounding medicines and vaccines in the US. Olivier Picard, NPA chair, emphasized the importance of evidence-based treatments and the role of vaccination campaigns in preventing serious illnesses.

Trump’s assertions regarding autism, paracetamol, and vaccines have faced criticism from autism advocates and scientists in the UK. Despite the controversy, the NPA urges parents to continue vaccinating their children to safeguard against severe diseases. Pharmacies are reassuring pregnant women that it is safe to take paracetamol for pain relief and fever management.

Picard stressed the significance of seeking medical advice from trusted sources like pharmacists and doctors, especially when questioning the safety of medications. Patients are encouraged to consult with their local pharmacist if they have concerns about the medications they are taking.
