MoneySuperMarket Energy experts have raised concerns about a surge in deceptive text and email scams linked to the Winter Fuel Payment. Earlier this year, the Winter Fuel Payment was restored for many pensioners after it was previously altered to a means-tested benefit, resulting in a drastic reduction of recipients from approximately 11 million to only 1.3 million.

Reports indicate that scammers are taking advantage of the confusion surrounding the benefit and the payment process. Several variations of the scam have been identified by MoneySuperMarket Energy, including text messages purporting to be from entities like the Department for Work and Pensions, a non-existent Department of Pensions, or even a fabricated ‘Department of Energy.’

In these fraudulent schemes, victims are notified of their eligibility for a payment but are instructed to register by a specific deadline either through a text message or by clicking a link provided in the message or email. However, the link redirects to a bogus website aimed at stealing personal and financial details.

It is important to note that most individuals receive the Winter Fuel Payment automatically without needing to make a claim or disclose any personal or banking information. According to data from Citizens Advice, around 9 million people were targeted by financial scams in 2024.

Laura Hinton, representing MoneySuperMarket Energy, emphasized the need for heightened vigilance against scams targeting energy bill support during the winter months. She warned that scammers are capitalizing on uncertainties surrounding energy cost assistance, particularly focusing on Winter Fuel Payments, which pose a heightened risk for older individuals.

Hinton advised the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of sources before interacting with any links in emails or texts. As the colder season approaches, an increase in scam messages related to energy bills is anticipated. The key advice is to remain vigilant, as this is the most effective way to safeguard oneself and loved ones from potential scams.

MoneySuperMarket offers the following tips to shield against fraudsters:

– Refrain from clicking on links in unexpected messages, especially those pertaining to government payments.
– Never share personal or financial information in response to unsolicited communications.
– Legitimate entities will not request sensitive data like security codes or banking details out of the blue.
– Ensure your devices are regularly updated with the latest security measures.
– Avoid downloading software or allowing remote access to your devices.
– Monitor your bank and card statements closely and report any suspicious activities promptly.
