Recent rumors and reports indicate that there may be some tension between Prince William and King Charles at times. While some royal sources have downplayed the idea that the monarch and his successor are currently not on good terms, several have acknowledged that there have been challenges between them over the years, despite generally agreeing on most issues.
An expert recently disclosed that “angry arguments” have been overheard by royal staff between the father and son, even through the thick palace walls. These rumors coincide with the Duke of Sussex initiating a reconciliation process with Charles after a period of strained relations, although there seems to be no immediate prospect of a similar reconciliation between Harry and his older brother.
Rebecca English, a royal expert, explained that the strained relationship between Charles and William can be traced back to the acrimonious breakdown of Charles’ first marriage to Princess Diana, William’s mother, which created lasting tensions between them over the years. Considering the challenges Diana faced in her lifetime and her emotional turmoil over Charles’s ongoing relationship with Camilla during their marriage, these tensions are not entirely surprising.
“Strong words have been exchanged in the past, with heated arguments resonating even through the thickest castle walls, sometimes within earshot of staff,” the expert noted. Disagreements on various issues, such as the preservation of ivory treasures in the Royal Collection (William advocates for their destruction while Charles argues for their retention as historical artifacts), have also led to confrontations between the two.
A royal aide, speaking anonymously to the Standard, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the long-standing complexity of William and Charles’ relationship. It was revealed that William never directly calls his father but instead schedules calls through the King’s private office.
When contacted by the Mirror, Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the matter. In Prince Harry’s memoir “Spare,” he mentioned that witnessing his father and brother having an amicable interaction, rather than arguing, was a memorable moment for him, especially after their meeting following Prince Philip’s funeral and shortly after the revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Despite the reports, sources cited by the Mail suggest that William and Charles are not currently experiencing worse relations than usual and may not frequently meet, a pattern that has been consistent over time. However, they remain unified in their vision for the future of the monarchy.
