A potential peace agreement with Gaza seems to be on the horizon, as indicated by the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper, fresh from the UN General Assembly, expressed a belief that the global community is eager to put an end to the ongoing conflict. This sentiment was echoed by US President Donald Trump, who mentioned progress towards a deal on Gaza.

Cooper emphasized the growing consensus and determination witnessed at the UN gathering, stating that the time has come for concerted efforts to halt the war. While acknowledging the complexity of the situation due to the prolonged crisis, she highlighted the need for not just an immediate ceasefire but a comprehensive plan for the future.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the other hand, reiterated the necessity to continue the offensive against Hamas in Gaza and criticized countries, including the UK, for recognizing a Palestinian state. Despite international pressure to label Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide, Cooper refrained from making such assertions, emphasizing the urgency of pursuing a peace agreement to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians.

Cooper stressed that the conflict cannot be resolved militarily and called for a shift in the Israeli government’s approach to ensure security for both Israelis and Palestinians. The White House is reportedly supporting the idea of appointing Tony Blair to lead a transitional authority in post-war Gaza, with plans for eventual Palestinian control.

Amid ongoing peace efforts, the White House has proposed a 21-point peace plan that includes Hamas disarmament, international security arrangements, and measures to prevent mass displacement in Gaza. However, previous suggestions by President Trump about relocating Gazans to neighboring countries and transforming the region into a tourist destination faced criticism.

Efforts towards peace in Gaza continue to evolve, with Cooper emphasizing the importance of maintaining the current momentum and international consensus.
