The European Ryder Cup team has expressed concerns regarding the behavior of certain American spectators at the recent tournament held at Bethpage Black in New York. Rory McIlroy, 36, and his wife, Erica, faced continuous verbal harassment throughout the event, leading McIlroy to address the issue publicly.

The situation escalated when a thrown beer hit Erica, prompting widespread condemnation. An MC hired by the PGA of America was removed from duty after instigating a derogatory chant directed at McIlroy. Shane Lowry, McIlroy’s competition partner, also condemned the mistreatment of Erica, emphasizing the unwarranted abuse she endured while supporting her husband and the team.

McIlroy commended his wife’s grace under pressure amidst the turmoil and highlighted his disappointment with the lack of decorum exhibited at the tournament. He stressed the need for golf to uphold higher standards and emphasized that such behavior would not be tolerated at future events.

Acknowledging the heavy security presence on the second day, McIlroy noted the disruptive conduct stemmed from a minority of attendees, with the majority of fans exhibiting respect for both teams. McIlroy and Erica Stoll’s relationship began at the 2012 Ryder Cup, evolving into marriage in 2017, with the couple welcoming their daughter in 2020.

McIlroy expressed gratitude for Erica’s unwavering support throughout his career, emphasizing her role in maintaining their private and stable family life amidst his professional success.
