A weight loss specialist has raised concerns about undiagnosed hormone imbalances potentially hindering numerous individuals in the UK from shedding excess weight, even when they maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise routine. Professor Franklin Joseph from Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic highlighted that many people may unknowingly face a biological challenge that cannot be overcome simply by monitoring calories.

“We encounter patients weekly who are diligently following the ‘right’ practices but struggle to lose weight,” Prof Joseph stated. “In numerous cases, the underlying issue lies not in food choices but in hormonal factors.”

Hormones play a crucial role in regulating appetite, fat storage, energy levels, and sleep patterns. When these hormones are disrupted, Prof Joseph explained that weight loss can become significantly more difficult, and at times, unattainable without addressing the root cause.

“Insulin resistance is a common hurdle,” he noted. “Once the body becomes less responsive to insulin, it tends to store more fat, especially around the midsection, and craves additional sugar, even on a ‘clean’ diet.”

Another unnoticed adversary is cortisol, the stress hormone. While cortisol is necessary in short bursts, prolonged elevation can interfere with metabolism and lead to stubborn belly fat.

“Many individuals are unaware that intense workouts like HIIT, especially when overdone or lacking recovery, can elevate cortisol levels,” Prof Joseph added. “If combined with existing stress or sleep deprivation, it can have negative repercussions, leaving individuals fatigued, inflamed, and no closer to a lean physique.”

Addressing a hormonal imbalance related to weight loss is not as straightforward as cutting carbs or intensifying gym sessions, according to Prof Joseph. Guesswork is unlikely to provide solutions.

“It is essential to comprehend the body’s actual functions,” he emphasized. “Factors such as insulin resistance, thyroid irregularities, or imbalances in stress hormones like cortisol need to be considered.”

These imbalances may not be detected in routine check-ups and can silently impede fat loss, trigger increased cravings, and induce fatigue, even with a seemingly perfect diet. While not everyone requires extensive testing, targeted assessments for blood sugar levels, thyroid function, or stress markers can offer insights into why desired results are not being achieved.

“Sometimes, it’s not about willpower but about biology,” Prof Joseph highlighted. “The only way to gain clarity is through a comprehensive evaluation.”

Indications of a hormonal weight loss issue may include persistent belly fat, afternoon energy slumps, sugar cravings despite high protein intake, disrupted sleep, or prolonged fatigue following rest days.

“If you are diligently following a plan with no visible progress, don’t just push harder,” Prof Joseph advised. “There might be underlying issues at play.”

With the increasing prevalence of prediabetes, thyroid malfunctions, and stress-related hormonal imbalances, Prof Joseph urges individuals not to blame themselves for stagnant weight readings. “Sometimes, your body is not being stubborn but signaling a need for assistance,” he concluded.
