Keir Starmer emphasized the need for allies to compel Vladimir Putin to engage in meaningful peace negotiations, highlighting the lack of sincerity from the Kremlin leader regarding peace efforts.
Speaking after discussions with over 20 nations in London, the Prime Minister outlined a strategy to intensify pressure on Russia by imposing economic sanctions and providing advanced weaponry to Ukraine.
Starmer underscored the urgency of taking decisive measures to cut off financial support for Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, emphasizing the responsibility of Russia to cover the costs of its destructive activities.
In a joint appearance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Starmer condemned Putin’s recent actions as undermining peace efforts, pointing out the ongoing attacks on civilians as clear evidence of Putin’s lack of commitment to ending the conflict.
Zelensky reiterated the severe impact of Russia’s actions on Ukraine, describing it as a deliberate campaign of terror, and reiterated the importance of receiving long-range missiles to defend against Russian aggression.
Various world leaders echoed the need for continued pressure on Russia, with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noting a decline in Russia’s resources and military effectiveness in the conflict.
Discussions also revolved around expanding sanctions, accessing frozen Russian assets for Ukraine’s defense, and addressing illicit financial activities that support Russia’s war efforts.
