A mother and her newborn baby tragically passed away shortly after the mother gave birth at home. The cause of death of Jennifer Cahill, 34, who died a day after delivering her baby girl, Agnes, was revealed during an inquest at Rochdale Coroners’ Court in June 2024.
Pathologist Lisa Barker, speaking via videolink, disclosed the results of Jennifer’s post-mortem examination, highlighting fluid accumulation in her chest, lungs, and kidneys, indicating multi-organ failure. Additionally, a tear in Jennifer’s vagina was discovered. The suggested cause of death was attributed to multi-organ failure resulting from cardiac arrest due to postpartum hemorrhage.
Investigation details showed Jennifer’s interactions on a Facebook group related to home births. The ‘Home Birth Support Group UK’ was described as a comprehensive resource. Testimonies from North West Ambulance Service personnel who responded to the emergency at Jennifer’s home revealed the challenging circumstances they faced in trying to save baby Agnes and Jennifer’s deteriorating health.
Efforts to resuscitate Agnes involved transporting her to the hospital while Jennifer’s condition worsened rapidly due to postpartum hemorrhage. Despite medical efforts, both mother and baby could not be saved. The inquest continues to uncover the events leading to this tragic outcome.
