Lucy Powell expressed gratitude to Labour supporters for entrusting her with the role of Deputy Leader of the Party, emphasizing the honor it brings. The Manchester Central MP emphasized her intention to decline a government position to freely advocate for the party’s direction. Powell secured victory in the Labour deputy leadership contest with 54% of the vote, surpassing Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson’s 46% share.

In her acceptance speech, Powell stressed the importance of offering hope and substantial change that aligns with the country’s aspirations. She highlighted the necessity of reaffirming Labour’s values and principles to provide clarity on the party’s stance. Powell pointed out the prevailing sentiment that the current government lacks the courage to deliver the promised transformation, prompting the need for bolder initiatives.

The leadership contest was prompted by Angela Rayner’s resignation due to a property-related issue. Powell garnered 87,407 votes from Labour Party members and affiliates, with Phillipson receiving 73,536 votes, although the voter turnout was relatively low at 16.6%.

Powell also praised her fellow candidates, acknowledging Bridget’s talent and dedication as the Education Secretary. She commended Angela Rayner for her significant contributions to the party and the country, highlighting the challenge of filling her shoes in the future. Powell reiterated her commitment to supporting Keir Starmer in the party’s ongoing battle for progressive policies and uniting the nation.

As the newly elected Deputy Leader, Powell emphasized the importance of championing Labour’s values and advocating for bold initiatives to address societal inequalities. She pledged to amplify the party’s voice and challenge narratives that undermine the party’s core beliefs. Powell underscored the historical achievements of Labour governments in advancing social justice and vowed to uphold these principles in her role.

Looking ahead to upcoming elections in England, Scotland, and Wales, Powell emphasized the need to build a broad, progressive consensus rather than engaging in divisive strategies. She expressed her dedication to working tirelessly to bring about the desired change that aligns with the electorate’s mandate for a better future.

In conclusion, Powell reiterated her commitment to serving the country, the party, and its members, recognizing the responsibility entrusted to her as Deputy Leader.
