Drug-related deaths have reached a record high in 2024, marking a continuous rise since 2012, according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics. The figure of 5,655 deaths in 2024 surpasses the previous years, with concerns raised over the increasing harm from substances like ketamine, synthetic opioids, and contaminated vapes, including those laced with the dangerous “zombie drug” Spice.
WithYou, a drug and alcohol treatment provider, emphasized the tragic nature of each drug-related death, pointing to the growing complexity and danger in the drug supply chain due to the prevalence of synthetic opioids and contaminated substances. The call for increased investment in accessible high-quality treatment was echoed by experts in the field.
The rise in drug-related fatalities is evident, with 5,448 deaths reported in 2023 and 4,907 in 2022 in England and Wales alone. Turning Point, a provider of addiction support services, highlighted the influx of synthetic opioids in the market, posing significant risks to life, as reflected in the alarming increase in deaths related to nitazenes.
Moreover, concerns were raised about the escalating death rates linked to cocaine and the disproportionately higher impact on men. The surge in ketamine mentions on death certificates was particularly troubling, prompting a call to action for governmental intervention.
Advocates stressed the need for a more supportive approach towards individuals using drugs, emphasizing the importance of engagement over a simplistic “just say no” message. The urgent call for expanded access to naloxone, drug checking facilities, and potential drug consumption rooms was made to address the crisis effectively.
In response to the escalating crisis, the government announced an additional £310 million investment in drug treatment services, along with an online awareness campaign targeting young adults and social media users, where illicit drug products are often advertised.
The misuse of e-cigarettes falsely claimed to contain THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, and the prevalence of dangerous synthetic cannabinoids like Spice in vape products have raised significant concerns. Notably, the increasing cases of ketamine poisoning have sparked worries among healthcare professionals, particularly regarding severe bladder issues in young recreational users.
The Office for National Statistics highlighted the concerning trend of rising drug poisoning deaths, with opioids and opiates like heroin and morphine being the most commonly cited drugs in death registrations. The need for immediate action, focusing on saving lives, promoting recovery, and addressing underlying causes, was emphasized as essential to combat the escalating public health crisis.
