A mother recently gave birth to a remarkable baby weighing close to 13 pounds, leaving midwives astonished at the newborn’s size upon arrival. Shelby Martin, the proud mother, shared images on social media showcasing her baby bump before and after delivery, with the newborn named Cassian garnering viral attention. Despite the awe-inspiring birth, Cassian faced challenges and had to spend 10 days in the ICU following his birth in July. Shelby reflected on her pregnancy journey, expressing concerns as Cassian continued to grow significantly.
Opting for a C-section due to the baby’s size, Shelby emphasized the importance of safety during the delivery process. She expressed gratitude for the medical team at TriStar Centennial who ensured a successful delivery. Shelby revealed that the decision was necessary to avoid potential complications during childbirth. Three months after Cassian’s birth, he is reported to be thriving.
Shelby recounted the intense moment in the operating room when Cassian was delivered, noting the shock among the medical staff at his size. Additionally, she highlighted the special bond with her son, who shares her birthday, describing him as her greatest gift. Despite the need for post-birth hospitalization due to potential glucose level issues in large babies, Cassian’s health steadily improved.
Comparing Cassian’s size to other notable newborns, it was mentioned that a baby named Alpha in the UK weighed even more than Cassian back in 2020. Another remarkable case was Akbar Risuddin, born in Indonesia in 2009, weighing a staggering 19 pounds 3 ounces. Akbar’s size was attributed to gestational diabetes, resulting in a challenging delivery process due to his extraordinary weight.
Dr. Binsar Sitanggang, who was involved in Akbar’s birth, commented on the difficulties posed by the baby’s size during the delivery. The exceptional cases of Cassian, Alpha, and Akbar highlight the unique challenges faced by mothers delivering unusually large babies.
