A man discovered that a woman he accused of stealing his cherished cat claimed she mistook it for a backpack when she took the £1,500 pet from his doorstep. Lewis Tayler witnessed the lady picking up his three-year-old cat, Gus, and placing him in her car outside his residence in Ashford, Surrey, on August 26, as captured by doorbell camera footage. The woman, a NHS clinical practitioner dropping off her daughter at a nearby school, was identified after someone who saw his posters informed him that she lived three miles away in Feltham, west London.
Upon visiting the woman’s address seeking explanations, Lewis observed footage from a neighbor’s camera showing the woman and two others laughing and carrying Gus into the house “like a trophy.” After reporting the incident to the authorities and providing the evidence, he confronted the woman, who initially claimed she thought Gus was a backpack but later confessed to taking him home despite concerns for the cat’s well-being.
Despite being invited inside, Gus was nowhere to be found in their home, with the woman alleging that the cat escaped when her daughter opened the back door. Following negotiations, the woman’s husband agreed to pay £900 for a pet detective to assist in the search after acknowledging his wife’s wrongdoing. Lewis expressed his dismay over the ordeal, stating that it was a distressing experience for him.
After enlisting the help of a pet detective named Colin Butcher, who convinced the woman’s husband to cover the costs, there was little progress in locating Gus. However, days later, Lewis received a call informing him that Gus had been found. The cat was eventually located in a neighbor’s garden, drawn by the scent left by Lewis, providing a timely return amid severe storms.
Despite the involvement of the police and ongoing inquiries into the incident, the cat was safely returned home. Lewis expressed gratitude for the support received from the community, friends, family, and neighbors throughout the ordeal.
