Nigel Farage expressed his displeasure with a Reform MP who made controversial remarks about Black and Asian individuals featured in advertisements, stating that the comments made him “unhappy.” Despite facing calls to denounce the comments as racist and dismiss the MP, Farage declined to label the remarks as such.
The MP in question, Sarah Pochin, who represents Runcorn and Helsby, issued an apology following the backlash over her comments. During the same event, Farage was accompanied by Ellie Reynolds, a survivor of grooming gangs, who criticized the ongoing investigation as “corrupt.” Farage suggested a parliamentary inquiry into the scandal, emphasizing the need for swift action as public patience wears thin.
Prior to Farage’s press conference, Labour Party chairwoman Anna Turley urged Reform UK to remove the party whip from Sarah Pochin, citing the racist nature of her comments and demanding immediate action. Following the event, Farage refrained from further pressuring Prince Andrew, asserting that Parliament should only intervene in extreme circumstances and highlighting the need for a measured approach.
Addressing the issue of justice for victims of grooming gangs, Farage proposed a parliamentary inquiry to uncover the truth under oath and ensure accountability for negligence. He also commented on the revelation that former Welsh Reform leader Nathan Gill admitted to accepting bribes, expressing shock and highlighting the need for vigilance in such matters.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Pochin’s remarks as “shocking racism” and called for decisive action to address such behavior within Reform UK. Farage defended Pochin’s comments as being part of a broader critique of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the advertising industry, emphasizing that he did not perceive any racist intent behind her words.
In an effort to restore public trust, Farage proposed that Parliament conduct its own inquiry into grooming gangs, involving both the House of Lords and the House of Commons in the process. He emphasized the importance of decisive action and accountability in addressing the ongoing scandal, which he described as a stain on the country’s history.
Additionally, the Liberal Democrats tabled a censure motion in Parliament to rebuke Pochin’s remarks and call for Farage to withdraw the whip, denouncing the comments as blatantly racist. As the issue continues to unfold, the focus remains on addressing racism, ensuring justice for victims, and holding accountable those responsible for perpetuating harmful attitudes and behaviors.
