O2 has officially announced that numerous customers are receiving a complimentary rapid upgrade. This upgrade is introducing faster 5G+ service to users throughout the UK, providing improved mobile coverage and significantly quicker downloads. O2 assures users of a 50% speed increase compared to the older 4G network.
Apart from speed and reliability enhancements, users can also expect longer battery life due to decreased power usage when not simultaneously connected to both 4G and 5G networks. Unlike standard 5G, which relies on 4G support, the new 5G+ technology eliminates this need.
The upgrade is currently being rolled out to users with 5G+ compatible devices and SIM cards, with over 700 towns and cities already activated.
Christian Hindennach, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the wide availability of the 5G+ service, highlighting its accessibility to all O2 customers on various plans, unlike other networks. The boosted performance caters to crowded areas and major venues, benefiting residents and visitors alike. This initiative underscores Virgin Media O2’s dedication to network enhancement and providing a more dependable user experience, with daily investments of £2 million to prepare customers for upcoming mobile innovations.
Users can check the local availability of the service using O2’s postcode tool. Notable 5G+ compatible devices include the iPhone 15, iPhone 16 series (including 16e and 17), Google Pixel 9 series (including Fold), and Google Pixel 10 series (including Fold).
