Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has commented on the controversial issues surrounding Jannik Sinner’s doping case and subsequent suspension in early 2025. Sinner, a rising Italian player, received a three-month ban after testing positive for an anabolic steroid, clostebol, in 2024.
Initially, Sinner escaped punishment as it was deemed that the positive tests resulted from contamination during a massage by his fitness coach. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) found Sinner not at fault for the incident in March 2024.
The ITIA defended its handling of Sinner’s case last year and dismissed claims of favoritism. In February, Sinner reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency, which contested the initial decision not to suspend him.
Following his suspension from February to May this year, Sinner strategically timed his return to compete in the French Open, avoiding missing out on major tournaments. Djokovic, who lost to Sinner in the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, recently discussed the situation during a conversation with Piers Morgan.
Djokovic expressed his surprise at the case, emphasizing his belief that Sinner did not intentionally violate anti-doping rules. However, Djokovic criticized the handling of the case, pointing out issues such as lack of transparency, inconsistency, and the timing of the ban to avoid missing significant events.
Djokovic, known for his own controversies, clarified his stance on vaccination during the pandemic, stating his support for freedom of choice. In other news, Sky has reduced the cost of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle, offering a discount and increased live Premier League matches for the upcoming season.
