A significant shift is imminent in how households in the UK stay connected with their loved ones. Starting in January of next year, consumers nationwide will transition from the traditional copper-wire phone lines, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to a newer technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP is a more modern system that utilizes an internet connection for making phone calls instead of the conventional analogue wiring. Despite initial apprehensions, there are numerous advantages to moving away from copper cables.

Users of VoIP can enjoy improved call clarity, enhanced connectivity reliability, as well as added features like spam call protection and call forwarding capabilities.

While the transition has been in the works for some time, it appears that a significant portion of the population remains unaware of the upcoming change.

According to a recent report by Phonely, over 58.7% of UK adults aged 50 and above are uninformed about the impending shutdown of traditional landlines, despite ongoing industry alerts and the extended deadline now set for January 31, 2027.

This lack of awareness could result in a rush of last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially leading to issues such as equipment shortages, delays in installations, and increased pressure on telecom providers, particularly in rural areas.

“As the permanent shutdown of the UK’s analogue landline network approaches in less than a year, recent research indicates that many over-50s are still unaware of this change,” Phonely stated.

For many older households that prioritize stability and reliability, this transition signifies a significant shift. With the 2027 deadline looming, experts caution against delaying the switch.

“The extension to 2027 has fostered a false sense of security,” remarked Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely.

“The fact that nearly six in ten over-50s are unaware of this transition should raise concerns for all stakeholders. Waiting until the last minute could lead to chaos,” Thompson added.

Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, noted, “These changes raise several questions for residents, and the lack of awareness could cause unnecessary worry, especially for older individuals who rely on their landline for social connections and safety.”

To navigate the transition, it’s essential to understand the changes happening with landlines and how to make the switch.

The UK’s copper-based PSTN network is being phased out and replaced by digital VoIP services. After January 31, 2027, traditional analogue landlines will cease to function, and calls will be routed through broadband connections.

While many younger households have already transitioned to mobile phones, a significant number of individuals over 50, especially in rural areas, still rely on landlines for daily communication, emergency contacts, and telecare alarm systems.

In some regions, landlines remain the most dependable method of staying connected. Telephone providers are expected to reach out to customers directly to explain the transition process, which should generally not incur additional costs. Most households will only require a broadband connection and a compatible phone for the new system.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the reliance on internet access, particularly for older consumers who are not yet online. Solutions for those without internet access are being explored ahead of the 2027 deadline, but individuals worried about the change are advised to contact their phone provider to explore available options.
