Toto Wolff is currently in discussions to divest a portion of his ownership in the Mercedes Formula 1 team. Wolff, who holds a 33% stake in the team and serves as its chief executive and team principal, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to sell a small segment of his equity to an external investor.

Sources indicate that Wolff is looking to sell between 5% and 10% of the team, potentially valuing the F1 outfit at approximately £4.5 billion. If the sale proceeds, Wolff stands to gain a substantial sum in the nine-figure range while retaining his current roles within the team. Mercedes confirmed that there will be no changes in the team’s governance structure moving forward.

While Mercedes-Benz Group, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS petrochemicals company, and Wolff currently each hold one-third ownership of the team, the spokesperson declined to comment on the specific adjustments to the ownership structure. All partners reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to Mercedes-Benz’s success in Formula 1.

Reported by Sportico, the potential deal would establish a groundbreaking valuation for an F1 team. For instance, McLaren, recent back-to-back constructors’ title winners, achieved a valuation exceeding £3 billion when Bahrain’s Mumtalakat sovereign wealth fund and Emirati investment group CYVN Holdings took full control in September.

The escalating value of F1 teams is attributed to the sport’s expanding global viewership, driven significantly by Liberty Media’s initiatives to engage a broader audience by highlighting drivers and other key personalities. The Formula 1: Drive to Survive series on Netflix, notably popular during the initial Covid lockdown in 2020, played a pivotal role in attracting new fans, particularly in the USA, which now hosts three races annually.

Formula 1 enthusiasts can enjoy live coverage of every practice, qualifying session, and race through Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle, offering a special introductory savings of £336. Additionally, subscribers gain access to around 100 TV channels, along with complimentary subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+.

In January 2022, INEOS acquired a third of the Mercedes F1 team for approximately £200 million. The proposed sale of Wolff’s stake, based on the new valuation, signifies a remarkable 650% surge in less than four years. Notably, lesser-performing teams, like Haas F1 led by Gene Haas, have also experienced heightened interest, with reports of rejecting offers well exceeding £1 billion from prospective investors in the past year.
