British soldiers have been dispatched to Israel to assist in overseeing a delicate ceasefire in Gaza following a request from the United States. Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that a senior commander and a small team of military personnel will be stationed in the area, with Britain playing a central role in a multinational force. The designated commander will act as the deputy in the American-led Civil Military Coordination Centre in Israel, where troops from Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates are also anticipated to participate.

This decision comes shortly after Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper previously stated that the UK had no intentions of deploying troops as part of this initiative. Speaking in London, Healey emphasized the UK’s role in monitoring the ceasefire and providing specialized expertise, while acknowledging that leadership will be assumed by others.

The ceasefire, brokered by US President Donald Trump, faced a test when Israel accused Hamas of killing two soldiers. In response, the IDF conducted a series of airstrikes in southern Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 45 Palestinians, including children. Both Israel and Hamas later reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson disclosed that a small team of UK planning officers, including a two-star deputy commander, have integrated into the US-led Civil Military Coordination Centre to aid in the planning for post-conflict stability in Gaza. The UK is collaborating with international partners to support the ceasefire and contribute to the peace process.

The US has committed to providing up to 200 troops for the multinational force, with both American and British personnel operating outside the Gaza Strip. The exact role, chain of command, and legal status of the task force are still being finalized. Additionally, the force is expected to assist in distributing humanitarian aid to the underprivileged population in Gaza, where food deliveries have faced challenges due to delays imposed by Israel.
