Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has been identified as the most budget-friendly European city to experience the festive season this Christmas. According to Skyscanner, a trip to Vilnius in December can be booked for just £35. Not only is Vilnius economical, but its Christmas tree has also won accolades as the most beautiful in Europe, earning it the title of European Christmas Capital for 2025 by the Christmas Cities Network.

The Christmas celebrations in Vilnius commence on 29 November with the lighting of the magnificent Christmas tree at Cathedral Square. This towering tree, a prominent winter attraction in the city, will remain lit until 6 January 2026, allowing ample time for visitors and locals to revel in the holiday ambiance.

Visitors can explore the enchanting Christmas Market, skate on the Vilnius ice rink nestled in the heart of the Old Town, and take a ride on the festive Christmas train touring through the beautifully decorated streets of Vilnius.

Vilnius has been ranked as the top destination for affordable Christmas getaways among 15 cities in Europe, as per the annual Post Office Christmas Markets Barometer. The total cost for a two-night weekend escape to Vilnius, including return flights, accommodation in three or four-star hotels, airport transfers, evening meals, festive drinks, and Christmas Market treats, is £509.

Despite the overall increase in costs across European destinations, Vilnius has maintained its affordability, with costs even decreasing by 0.4% compared to 2024. Notably, Vilnius is 8% more cost-effective than Riga, the second-ranked city, where expenses have risen by 1.8%, despite certain amenities being cheaper in Riga than in Vilnius.

Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, emphasized the value of considering currency fluctuations when planning a holiday. She highlighted that sterling’s decline against various European currencies could impact travel costs, with the pound faring better against the euro compared to other currencies like the Hungarian forint and Swedish kronor.

Travel enthusiasts have praised Vilnius for its magical and crowd-free Christmas atmosphere. Visitors have lauded the city for its elaborate decorations, charming storefront displays, and festive ambiance, making it a must-visit destination during the holiday season.
