A former educator has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for the disturbing sexual abuse of three students at a Catholic school in Southampton, Hampshire, spanning five years. Leo Norman, described as predatory, specifically targeted teenage girls while employed at St Anne’s School’s sixth form from September 2014 to June 2019. The 46-year-old English and media teacher, from Southampton, admitted to three counts of engaging in sexual activity with minors in a position of trust, leading to his sentencing at Portsmouth Crown Court.
Apart from the jail term, Norman received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was mandated to register as a sex offender for a decade. During sentencing, the court emphasized that he had exploited his authoritative role, betraying the trust placed in him by his victims. Prosecutors revealed that Norman manipulated the girls by offering them extra attention, compliments, and delving into their personal lives to establish trust before engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct.
Melissa Garner, a specialist prosecutor at the CPS Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit, condemned Norman’s repeated betrayal of trust, highlighting the duty of teachers to safeguard children. She commended the victims for their bravery in coming forward and supporting the prosecution, ensuring Norman’s conviction and safeguarding others.
Detective Constable Laura Hardie of Hampshire Constabulary characterized the case as alarming, emphasizing Norman’s abuse of authority to victimize three teenage girls over multiple years. She praised the courage of the women for sharing their experiences with the police, which led to Norman being held accountable.
During the trial, the victims testified that Norman’s intentions were clear through his actions, including writing suggestive poems, making them sit on his lap, and showering them with compliments and inappropriate touches. One victim expressed feeling manipulated and blamed for Norman’s inappropriate attraction, describing herself as feeling like a “siren” due to his advances.
