Ekow Essuman’s journey towards a world title opportunity has been filled with challenges beyond the boxing ring. The welterweight contender has been on a redemption path following the loss of his British title two years ago. His recent victory over former undisputed champion Josh Taylor has set him up for a potential shot at the top by facing Jack Catterall in the upcoming bout.
The upcoming fight, set to take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in front of a massive crowd, will also feature Chris Eubank Jr’s rematch with Conor Benn. Essuman, aged 36, is eager to step into a ring that doesn’t pose safety risks, unlike his usual training environment. The DCT Boxing Academy in Nottingham, where Essuman trains, has been dealing with maintenance issues, forcing the boxers to navigate around leaks and faulty facilities.
Despite the challenges, Essuman remains focused on his boxing career aspirations. He highlighted the safety concerns at the gym, including malfunctioning toilets, inadequate heating, and roof leaks leading to puddles in the training area. The gym had to undergo significant repairs, including replacing the ring canvas and flooring, to ensure a safe training environment.
Essuman, ahead of his crucial fight, has found temporary training arrangements but expressed disappointment over the disruption of community programs at the gym. The gym’s outreach activities, such as anti-knife classes and youth boxing sessions, have been put on hold due to the facility’s condition.
As Essuman prepares for his upcoming bout, he is not only focused on his boxing career but also on addressing the ongoing challenges at the gym. Despite the setbacks, his determination to succeed inside and outside the ring remains unwavering.
