A video has surfaced showing a group of gorillas still housed in their enclosure three years after the closure of Bristol Zoo to the public. Despite the zoo shutting down in 2022, eight gorillas were recently filmed by urban explorers “banging on the windows.” Concerns have been raised by a charity regarding the continued captivity of the gorillas at the old site while a new enclosure at a different location remains unfinished.

The zoo has reported increased security measures following several break-ins post-closure, citing risks to both the gorillas and intruders. However, a viral video from a visitor has highlighted lapses in security, claiming easy access to the enclosure and expressing concerns about the animals’ well-being.

The individual behind the video aimed to raise awareness about the situation, questioning the transparency of Bristol Zoo and asserting that the gorillas should not be kept in captivity. They emphasized the need for openness and expressed sympathy for the animals.

The video footage showcased various parts of the zoo, including the gorilla enclosure where the animals were observed interacting with visitors through the glass. The zoo confirmed plans to relocate the gorillas to a new habitat in the upcoming Bristol Zoo Project, which boasts a significantly larger space than their current home.

While the zoo declined to comment on the recent video, a zoo official highlighted the challenges posed by trespassers, emphasizing the priority of animal welfare. Despite ongoing criticisms and concerns raised by wildlife organizations, the zoo reiterated that the gorillas have access to suitable indoor and outdoor spaces with regulated conditions at the existing site.

The incidents at the closed zoo have sparked discussions about animal care and welfare, with stakeholders calling for more transparent practices and ensuring the safety of both the animals and any individuals involved.
