There is a timeless charm to exceptional theme parks that allows parents to relive their childhood and fills the air with the joyful sounds of children’s laughter and excitement.
When PortAventura World in Spain marked its 30th anniversary, it presented an ideal opportunity for a fall getaway. Accompanied by our three kids – aged 15, 11, and three, my partner and I embarked on a thrilling adventure of roller coasters, live shows, and sunny days.
Our accommodation for this escapade was Hotel Gold River, a themed hotel within the PortAventura premises. Stepping into the lobby felt like entering a movie set, where we half-expected a cowboy to burst through the saloon doors at any moment.
Our room overlooked a Wild West-themed “main street,” and each morning, we strolled past the charming façades to reach the park entrance. The convenience of staying on-site made a significant difference – no parking hassles or traffic delays, just a leisurely walk to our daily adventures. The hearty breakfast buffets ensured we started each day fully energized and eager for the experiences ahead.
PortAventura is sectioned into various themed areas representing different parts of the world, offering a global exploration experience without the jet lag. Dining at the park is not just about food; it’s an immersive journey through diverse culinary cultures, where even the snacks play a part in the overall story.
We began our journey in Mediterrània, where Spanish tunes wafted over the waterfront and the aroma of paella beckoned from the eateries. Transitioning into Mexico, we immersed ourselves in the Day of the Dead festivities before summoning the courage to tackle the towering Hurakan Condor drop tower.
Our adventure continued in China, where we braved the legendary Dragon Khan roller coaster, a twisting ride that roared through the skies, intertwining with our favorite attraction, Shambhala. PortAventura is an excellent place to introduce kids to the thrills of roller coasters. With our Express Passes, we efficiently bypassed queues, maintaining high excitement levels and minimizing potential meltdowns.
For those who prefer a slower pace, there are plenty of other activities available. In the Far West section, the kids enjoyed classic shooting galleries and carnival games. The log flumes and water rapids provided moments of laughter, especially for those who didn’t mind getting a bit wet.
The park also offers parades, shows, and character meet-and-greets, including beloved figures like Woody Woodpecker and Bert and Ernie. Our youngest was captivated by the Sesame Street characters and the 3D dark ride – Street Mission, where he outperformed us in shooting at 3D cookies!
Among the highlights of our visit was the park’s latest attraction, Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence, which appealed to our older children. Inspired by an action-packed film, this coaster is not your average ride.
It’s a fully enclosed, multi-directional experience that plunges you into darkness with sudden twists, drops, and turns that catch you by surprise. We exited the ride exhilarated and slightly dizzy, unanimously agreeing that it was one of our top five favorite attractions during the trip.
The park was abuzz with celebration, adorned with banners commemorating 30 years of thrills and family entertainment, accompanied by themed menus. A visit to Ferrari Land is a must when at PortAventura World; we eagerly anticipated testing Red Force – the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Europe, accelerating from 0 to 180 km/h in just five seconds.
The expressions on the kids’ faces upon disembarking said it all – pure, speechless amazement. We explored interactive exhibits, enjoyed races, simulators, and child-friendly driving zones, where even our youngest, at three years old, braved Junior Red Force.
Each evening, we returned to Hotel Gold River, covered in dust, warmed by the sun, and grinning from ear to ear. From our room, we could witness the distant glow of the park lights fading into the night – a perfect backdrop to the exhausted yet exhilarated hum that only a day at a theme park can induce.
PortAventura’s 30th anniversary not only marked a milestone for the park but also became a celebration for our family. It was a few days filled with laughter,
