An increasing number of British individuals are opting to sell their homes and relocate to foreign countries for a fresh start. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), around 639,000 Brits left the UK in the past year, marking a nearly 10% increase since 2023.
One such family, Jack Masterson, 36, and his wife Natalie, 35, made the decision to move from Huddersfield in Yorkshire to a lively city in Canada. Motivated by a desire for a new experience for their children, they seized the opportunity presented by the Canadian Express Entry visa due to Natalie’s background as a former NHS nurse.
This visa program, introduced in 2023, targets healthcare professionals to address the shortage in the industry across Canada. Jack highlighted the ease of the relocation process and the appeal of Canada due to its demand for nurses.
The Masterson family settled in North Vancouver, where they found a growing community of Brits also seeking a change in lifestyle. The region has earned the nickname “British Columbia” due to the notable British presence.
Despite the differences in everyday costs like the high price of a loaf of bread in Canada, Jack expressed contentment with their decision to move. He emphasized the beauty of Vancouver, the welcoming atmosphere, and the enjoyable outdoor activities that have enriched their lives.
Simon Hood, an expert in relocation services, acknowledged the challenges related to affordability and the cost of living in Canada post-COVID. However, he noted that many individuals, like the Mastersons, are drawn to the intangible aspects and unique experiences that Canada offers, which outweigh purely economic considerations.
The Mastersons’ journey reflects a growing trend of Brits seeking a new beginning abroad, driven by a desire for change and opportunities beyond their homeland.
