Britain is facing increasing worries about the risk of a nuclear attack due to rising global tensions. RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, under US operation, is anticipated to store US/NATO nuclear weapons soon, placing the UK at the forefront of potential conflict with Russia.

The presence of American nuclear weapons on British territory significantly heightens the country’s vulnerability to being targeted. Analysts in the military sector indicate that in a wartime scenario, Lakenheath would likely be a primary target before other areas face attacks.

While experts acknowledge the catastrophic global impact of a nuclear conflict involving the US, NATO, and Russia, it is crucial to understand the direct repercussions for British towns and cities. The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament warns that a single nuclear strike on any urban area would have devastating consequences for the local population and environment, with far-reaching radioactive effects.

Their report highlights that an attack with a Russian warhead like an SS-25 or SS-27 on London could result in nearly a million casualties, while Glasgow and Cardiff could face 326,000 and 196,000 deaths, respectively. The core of a nuclear blast could reach temperatures of several million degrees Celsius, causing instant destruction within a significant radius.

Reflecting on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima in 1945, where shadows were seared into stone within a half-mile radius, it is estimated that individuals up to four miles away from the blast could perish due to the explosion and ensuing firestorm. The extreme temperatures would ignite structures, leading to widespread fires and oxygen depletion.

The immediate fatality rate in the blast zone is projected to surpass 90%. Further out, fatalities would rise gradually among those exposed to the initial explosion, with severe injuries, burns, and other life-threatening conditions affecting individuals up to seven miles away. Emergency services would struggle to respond effectively, overwhelmed by the scale of casualties and infrastructure damage.

Survivors would also face the threat of radioactive fallout, resulting in various health issues ranging from hair loss to internal bleeding. Long-term consequences could include radiation-induced cancers and birth abnormalities, affecting generations to come. Moreover, the environmental and climatic impacts of nuclear weapons could lead to widespread famine affecting billions globally.

The aftermath of a nuclear war could disrupt food production on a massive scale, potentially resulting in starvation for two billion people. The devastating effects of nuclear conflict extend beyond immediate casualties to long-term health risks, environmental degradation, and global food insecurity.
