A woman in Australia, originally from Chile, experienced a terrifying encounter with a magpie that left her with severe injuries. Marcela Montalva, who recently relocated to the remote town of Ravenswood, was attacked by the bird while riding her bike to the post office. The incident caused her to lose control, resulting in a hard fall and serious injuries to her face and neck.
Montalva, who had high hopes and dreams for her working holiday in Australia, never expected such a traumatic event. Following the attack, she had to be airlifted to Townsville University Hospital for treatment due to the remote location of the incident. Doctors discovered multiple fractures in her left cheekbone and a rare fracture in her neck caused by the magpie’s aggression.
Despite being lucky to survive the ordeal, Montalva now urgently requires facial reconstructive surgery to address her difficulties with eating and speaking. Unfortunately, her travel insurance has declined coverage for the medical expenses, citing a technicality regarding the absence of a helmet during the incident.
In response to the financial burden of the necessary procedures, Montalva has managed to raise approximately $12,000 (AUD) through a GoFundMe campaign. The funds will go towards her reconstructive surgeries to restore her facial functions.
Reflecting on the unexpected turn of events, Montalva expressed disbelief at the bird attack leading to such severe consequences. She emphasized her commitment to safety but acknowledged the unpredictability of such incidents, underscoring the challenges she now faces in her recovery journey.
