Brighton Palace Pier is currently on the market for sale as its owner aims to secure a buyer before summer. Knight Frank has been chosen by Brighton Pier Group to manage the sale of the historic 127-year-old pier, which was acquired for £18 million in 2016. The Grade II listed pier, inaugurated in May 1899, is one of the iconic landmarks in Brighton.

Facing challenges with declining visitor numbers and escalating expenses, Brighton Pier Group, known for operating various leisure sites and mini-golf venues, has decided to sell the 1,722ft long pier. In 2024, the company experienced a decrease in earnings to £300,000 from £1.7 million the previous year, with a 4% decline in like-for-like sales. To counter the drop in visitors, the company implemented a £1 entry fee for non-residents, which was later increased to £2 in March the following year.

Anne Ackord, the CEO of The Brighton Pier Group, highlighted the profitability and potential growth opportunities of Brighton Palace Pier, emphasizing that the sale presents a chance to contribute to its future success. The BBC reported Ms. Ackord’s statement that potential buyers would ideally take over the property by summer and would need to make a substantial investment.

With a variety of attractions including two arcades, 19 funfair rides, a restaurant, bars, kiosks, event spaces, and a children’s play area, the pier is expected to attract interest from both domestic and international buyers. Brighton Pier Group had previously indicated its intention to sell the pier following subdued trading in 2025, along with seeking buyers for its Lightwater Valley theme park in North Yorkshire.

Ms. Ackord also raised concerns about the importance of tourism to Brighton’s economy, urging collective action to ensure a prosperous future. She explained the financial struggles faced by the pier due to a significant increase in costs, exacerbated by the introduction of the £2 entry fee.

In conclusion, the sale of Brighton Palace Pier represents an opportunity for investors to be part of the next chapter in its storied history and contribute to shaping its future as a cherished national treasure.
