Paula Hudgell, a resilient individual, has faced and conquered numerous challenges in her life. She provided a loving home for her adopted son Tony, who underwent amputation due to severe abuse by his birth parents. Paula successfully advocated for Tony’s Law, which imposes stricter penalties for child abuse, including a maximum life sentence for those responsible for a child’s death while in their care.
Recognized for her dedication to preventing child abuse, Paula was awarded an OBE in 2022. In 2024, Tony, at the age of nine, received the British Empire Medal for his contributions to the cause. Additionally, he was honored with the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain award. Tony affectionately refers to the Princess of Wales as his “best friend.”
To further support children affected by abuse, the Hudgell family established the Tony Hudgell Foundation. Sadly, Paula, aged 58, is now battling terminal cancer after a misdiagnosis that delayed treatment for four years. Despite her own health struggles, Paula remains focused on the well-being of her family, especially Tony and her other children.
Initially diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2022, Paula emphasizes the importance of timely cancer screenings. Her persistence in seeking proper medical attention led to the eventual diagnosis. After successful treatments and setbacks, Paula’s cancer resurfaced, presenting a new challenge.
Paula’s determination and resilience shine through as she continues her fight against cancer, all while advocating for a child cruelty register in the UK. Her unwavering commitment to justice and her family’s well-being drives her to push forward, even in the face of her own mortality.
As she awaits potentially life-altering surgery, Paula remains hopeful and focused on creating lasting memories with her loved ones. Her strength and positive outlook serve as an inspiration to many, including her son Tony, whose journey of healing and resilience has touched countless lives.
