Sky is launching a new feature called Real Time for Sky Glass and Sky Stream, powered by Sky OS, to reduce streaming delays starting tomorrow. The timing coincides with the World Cup kick-off, aiming to address the frustration many viewers face with significant streaming latency. Traditionally, services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX lagged up to 40 seconds behind live broadcasts, leading to spoilers and awkward moments. Real Time will minimize this delay, offering a more immediate viewing experience.
Initially introduced for Premier League matches in 2024, the low-latency streaming technology is now expanding to include BBC and ITV coverage, making it accessible for major events like the World Cup.
According to Sky, Real Time enhances the live sports experience by bridging the gap between live action and screen visuals, reducing lag and spoilers for fans following matches. To activate Real Time during supported live sports broadcasts, viewers can select the Real Time option on their screens. This feature is available on Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices through an opt-in button or dedicated channels like BBC One HD RT, ITV1 HD RT, and ITV4 HD RT.
The update is crucial for Sky’s streaming future, marking a shift away from the satellite-based Sky Q platform.
