Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are experiencing a concerning phenomenon where they are turning red and dying following last year’s exceptionally dry summer, sparking worries about the fate of these iconic trees in the province. Professor Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has been closely monitoring the situation and has observed firsthand the gradual reddening, drying out, and eventual death of these beloved evergreen trees, commonly used as Christmas trees.

Taylor’s extensive research on the impact of climate change on New Brunswick’s forests has revealed a troubling trend. He notes that warm and dry conditions, like the drought witnessed last year, severely hinder the growth potential of balsam fir trees. This adverse effect has been previously observed after other hot and dry summers, such as in 1986 and 2018.

The lack of sufficient moisture prompts the trees to halt their photosynthesis process prematurely in response to drought stress, impeding their growth and ability to produce essential energy stores for basic metabolic functions and defense mechanisms. This vulnerability puts the trees at a higher risk of succumbing to external stressors like insects or pathogens, leading to increased instances of die-offs.

Moreover, balsam fir trees have shallow root systems, making it challenging for them to access water during prolonged dry periods. Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner, has noticed significant damage to balsam firs on his property, with the trees progressively turning red from the lower branches upwards. Despite processing some of the deceased trees into lumber, McKeil is modifying his harvesting strategies to maximize the remaining fir’s value before further losses occur.

McKeil expresses concerns about the future of balsam fir trees, particularly in southern New Brunswick, attributing their declining prospects to the escalating impacts of climate change. He anticipates that the species may struggle to adapt or may eventually disappear, potentially migrating northward as temperatures rise.

Professor Taylor emphasizes the urgency of climate action in light of the visible consequences of changing environmental conditions on balsam firs. He views the red trees as a tangible indicator of the detrimental effects of a shifting climate on New Brunswick’s iconic tree species, likening it to a warning signal akin to a canary in a coal mine. Taylor advocates for a swift transition away from fossil fuels and sustainable forest management practices to mitigate climate change and safeguard the future of ecosystems like the balsam fir forests.
