Statistics Canada has reported that a significant number of drivers crossed the Gordie Howe International Bridge into Canada in the initial days following its inauguration. The highly anticipated bridge, which links Windsor and Detroit, opened for traffic on July 27, albeit after experiencing several weeks of delays.
According to preliminary data from StatCan, there were approximately 18,900 return trips made by Canadian residents from the United States via the Gordie Howe bridge within the first five days of its operation. During the same timeframe, around 18,100 U.S. residents entered Canada by crossing the bridge.
In comparison, the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, other key border crossings in the area, recorded a total of 52,700 inbound trips by both Canadian and U.S. residents during the same period.
Furthermore, in the final five days of July, 4,100 commercial trucks transported goods to Canada by utilizing the Gordie Howe bridge.
The inauguration of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has clearly resulted in a significant influx of traffic between the two countries, with both drivers and commercial vehicles utilizing the new route for cross-border travel.
