Australian beef is being sold in Canadian supermarkets at lower prices compared to Canadian beef, causing concerns among some local producers. Consumers, however, are pleased with the affordable option. Tyler Fulton, the president of the Canadian Cattle Association, mentioned that Australian beef has been available to consumers for years, especially for steak cuts. He explained that various factors contribute to the price gap, such as the leaner quality of Australian beef due to its grass-based production model.

The increased visibility of Australian beef in Canada can be attributed to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) that came into effect in 2018. This trade deal has allowed Australia to have more access to the Canadian beef market. Fulton acknowledged that while the agreement benefits Canada in other markets like Japan and Vietnam, there is a short-term need for imported beef to meet consumer demand.

CBC News interviewed shoppers at a Loblaws-owned store in Regina to understand their perspectives on the availability and pricing of beef. Some consumers, like Karen Novak, have adjusted their diets due to the high cost of beef, opting for more affordable options. Others, like Jordan Fieseler, prefer to purchase beef in bulk from local producers for sustainability reasons.

Loblaws responded to the pricing disparity by stating that the tightening of North American cattle supply and the increase in Australian beef production have influenced market pricing. The company remains committed to supporting Canadian beef producers while offering customers choice and value. Fulton expressed optimism about the opportunities for domestic growth in the Canadian beef sector, emphasizing the importance of catering to the local market while exploring international opportunities.
