Ladan Jahankha finds immense joy and fulfillment in being part of her local running community. Moving to St. John’s from Iran, where women face significant barriers to sports participation, has allowed her to live out her dreams. In Iran, female athletes are subjected to strict clothing regulations and are often barred from various sporting events.

Jahankha shared her struggles with attempting to pursue running in Tehran during her 20s but was hindered by societal constraints. Now settled in St. John’s and working as a teacher, she rediscovered her passion for running after connecting with a colleague who shared the same interest. Through a Facebook group, she found a coach and a welcoming beginner running group that supported her journey.

Despite ongoing tensions resulting from the U.S.-Iran conflict, running has become Jahankha’s outlet for managing stress and anxiety. She expressed gratitude to Canada for providing opportunities that were inaccessible in her home country due to strict limitations. Recently, she participated in a Pride race with her family and looks forward to another 5-kilometer race on August 16.

Jahankha emphasized the significance of freedom and expressed her happiness and appreciation for the newfound liberties she enjoys in Canada. Running has not only become a regular part of her life but also a source of joy and empowerment.
