A powerful El Niño event, known as “super” or “Godzilla” El Niño, is back in the Pacific Ocean, disrupting global weather patterns amid already high temperatures worldwide. July marked the hottest month on record for North America and Europe, resulting in heatwaves, fatalities, dried-up rivers, and wildfires. Although this intense summer coincides with El Niño’s return, climate scientists clarify that the phenomenon is not directly responsible for the extreme weather events. However, they warn that the interaction between El Niño and climate change could exacerbate the situation.

According to Josh Willis, a climate scientist at NASA, the impacts of El Niño will be widespread and significant. This natural phenomenon occurs every three to seven years, significantly affecting weather patterns. El Niño’s warming of the Pacific Ocean surface triggers atmospheric changes, leading to contrasting weather conditions such as heavy rainfall in dry regions and drought in typically wet areas.

The ongoing El Niño event, potentially one of the strongest on record, could rival previous significant occurrences in 2015-16 and 1997-98. Scientists emphasize the need for further research to understand the relationship between El Niño and current extreme weather events. Anticipated impacts include warmer winters in Canada and the northern U.S., with altered precipitation patterns. El Niño is also affecting tropical regions like Peru and Indonesia, leading to heavy rains, flooding, and wildfires.

The combination of El Niño and human-induced climate change poses challenges for predicting weather patterns and their long-term effects. Climate scientists predict that the consequences of this El Niño event will persist into 2027, affecting global weather patterns and intensifying extreme events. The interaction between El Niño and climate change underscores the urgency for proactive measures to address the escalating risks posed by extreme weather conditions.
