German authorities are currently investigating a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to escalate retaliation against countries supporting Ukraine.
In an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, Lavrov stated, “We will employ more severe measures to dismantle everything that aids the West in arming Kyiv’s military machine. We are already taking action.”
The drone, containing an unknown explosive device, was found in the cargo operations zone’s security area near Leipzig airport’s south runway, classified as critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport for transporting armaments, ammunition, weapons, and military supplies to Ukraine via flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.
This discovery, where the drone was positioned next to a Ukrainian cargo plane, signifies a heightened level of threat for Germany, as stated by the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. He described the incident as a potentially significant hybrid threat scenario, indicating professional involvement rather than amateur operation.
While German authorities continue their investigation without confirming the drone’s origin, U.S. intelligence reports to the Wall Street Journal suggested potential links to the Russian government. Berlin is proceeding cautiously, enhancing anti-drone capabilities while refraining from premature attributions.
Dobrindt highlighted the daily targeting of Germany through hybrid warfare tactics, including espionage, sabotage, cyber attacks, and covert actions by foreign entities aiming to destabilize and bring about political and social changes. Recent incidents, such as the thwarted Russian plot to assassinate a German defense contractor CEO and the arrest of a suspected Russian spy scouting sabotage targets, underscore the persistent threat landscape.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russian interference in Germany through online campaigns, with a focus on exacerbating controversies within NATO member countries and Ukraine. Dobrindt emphasized the impact of disinformation attempts, particularly during upcoming regional elections, as adversaries target German politics and society.
Hans-Jakob Schindler, from the Counter Extremism Project, characterized the Leipzig drone incident as an aggressive escalation in Russia’s interference tactics, pushing the boundaries of acceptable behavior. He warned of the urgent need to define the threshold between defense measures and direct conflict in response to such provocations.
Schindler noted Lavrov’s recent statements as a departure from Russia’s previous denials of involvement in Western countries’ affairs, signaling a more aggressive stance against Europe, the West, and NATO. This shift raises concerns about the evolving nature of hybrid warfare and the potential for conventional attacks.
