Renowned artist Yayoi Kusama captivated the global audience with her distinctive artistic vision, characterized by inundating her artworks with an infinite array of her iconic polka dots. Kusama, a celebrated contemporary artist from Japan, passed away at the age of 97 in a Tokyo hospital, as announced by her studio.

Her artistry transcended borders, with exhibitions in prestigious venues such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, and the Museum Ludwig in Germany. Notably, her “Infinity Mirror Rooms” installations, including the popular “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors” exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2018, drew large crowds and acclaim.

Recognizable by her trademark orange bob wig, Kusama’s works feature recurring psychedelic motifs like vibrant swirls, nets, and her iconic polka dots, creating mesmerizing visual experiences. She often expressed that her art reflected her perception of the world, mirroring the hallucinatory spots she had seen since childhood.

Despite facing mental health struggles and initial rejection by Japan’s cultural elite for her avant-garde style, Kusama’s artistry sparked public dialogue and solidified her presence in the art world. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, she moved to the United States in 1957 to pursue her artistic endeavors.

In addition to her visual art, Kusama delved into filmmaking and writing, publishing several novels. She once remarked that her creative process was so enigmatic that she sometimes surprised herself with the outcomes. Kusama’s collaborations with fashion brands, including Louis Vuitton, and her diverse artistic ventures underscore her multifaceted talent and enduring legacy.
