A woman from Nova Scotia expressed regret over alerting the RCMP about a reckless driver, as it led to an unexpected visit from an officer at her home. Robin MacDougall was driving to Port Hawkesbury to celebrate Father’s Day when she noticed a vehicle swerving on Highway 104. Concerned, she called 911. After informing the dispatcher that the erratic driver was heading towards Cape Breton, she thought the matter was resolved. However, she was surprised to receive a call from an officer saying they had been in her house.

MacDougall and her partner had left their back door unlocked, allowing the officer to enter the house. Feeling her privacy was violated, MacDougall contacted a friend for assistance. The RCMP explained that a dropped call prompted the home visit, emphasizing they were responding to a potential distress situation rather than pursuing an impaired driver. Discrepancies arose between MacDougall and the RCMP regarding the dropped call, with MacDougall attributing it to poor cell coverage and denying making a third call. Despite the incident, the RCMP defended their actions, citing a duty to investigate possible emergencies as per a Supreme Court decision.

Moving forward, MacDougall remains uncertain about intervening in similar situations, while the RCMP maintains that their response was appropriate. The incident highlights the challenges posed by communication issues and the importance of addressing emergency calls effectively.
