A peculiar marvel of nature, the narwhal tusk, can reach lengths of up to three meters. This tusk, which is an upper tooth growing through the whale’s lip on the left side, stands out as the sole mammal tusk that grows perfectly straight without any curvature.
An international research team has uncovered the reason behind the tusk’s straight growth, attributing it to the distinct pattern of opposing spirals it possesses. This discovery surprised study author Henrik Birkedal from Aarhus University in Denmark, who highlighted the presence of two opposing spirals in the tusk.
New findings published in Nature Communications detail how these opposing spirals, one turning right and the other left, contribute to the straight growth of the narwhal tusk. The research journey began when Birkedal collaborated with colleagues to explore the molecular structure of these unique tusks.
Through advanced imaging methods akin to CT scans, the researchers identified two opposing spirals within the tusks, one left-handed on the outer layer of cementum and a right-handed spiral in the inner dentine layer. This revelation not only demystifies the narwhal’s straight tusk but also offers insights into the structural principles of human bones.
Renowned narwhal biologist Martin Nweeia from Harvard University praised the research for delving into the extraordinary narwhal tooth, which he considers the most remarkable on the planet. Nweeia’s prior research has indicated that the tusk primarily functions as a sensory organ rather than for defense or feeding, contrary to some speculative notions.
Looking forward, Nweeia hopes for more off-season studies and partnerships with Indigenous communities to enhance understanding of narwhals. Collaborating with Inuit knowledge holders can provide essential insights into these elusive creatures, especially during times when scientific observations are limited.
