U.S. Vice-President JD Vance commented on the recent trade agreement with Canada during a fundraising event on Wednesday. He mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to showcase toughness compared to U.S. President Donald Trump. Vance credited Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, a longtime friend, for his support for Canada.
At the private gathering in Southampton, N.Y., Vance described Carney as a “very nice guy” and highlighted their good relationship. However, Vance noted that Carney portrayed himself as trying to outdo Trump, despite making concessions on several issues. He revealed that Jivani, an influential advocate with ties to the U.S., played a significant role in the negotiations.
Vance also discussed Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative party leader in Canada, labeling him as insignificant in the trade talks. Meanwhile, the White House and Vance’s office had not yet responded to requests for comments.
President Trump recently announced a last-minute deal to postpone new tariffs on Canadian goods, following discussions with Carney and extensive bilateral talks. Trump praised the deal as beneficial for all parties involved and highlighted the positive relationship between the U.S. and Canada.
Reports indicate that the trade agreement will involve the U.S. reducing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles. In return, Carney urged provincial leaders to reintroduce American alcohol products in Canadian stores. The specifics of Canada’s concessions remain undisclosed, with Trump mentioning the elimination of tariffs on American agricultural products.
Dominic LeBlanc, the Canada-U.S. Minister, returned to Washington for further negotiations ahead of an impending deadline. Vance emphasized that the objective was to influence Canada’s policies and steer them towards aligning with U.S. interests.
Vance praised Jivani’s discreet involvement in the negotiations, mentioning his advocacy for mutual benefits in various sectors. He highlighted their close friendship and Jivani’s active role in supporting Canada’s trade efforts. Jivani’s initiatives have caused internal tensions within the Canadian Conservative Party, particularly with Poilievre advocating for tariff-free agreements.
Jivani’s office did not provide an immediate response to requests for comments. The MP’s outreach to the Trump administration has sparked debates within the party, with Poilievre expressing differing views on the trade negotiations.
