Iran announced on Wednesday that it had launched an attack on 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the sinking of five Iranian oil tankers by the U.S. This marked the largest reported exchange of attacks on shipping by both countries since the onset of the six-month-long conflict.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran stated that it had conducted a ballistic missile strike on a U.S. military base near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan. Additionally, Iran claimed to have targeted two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers that were trying to navigate a restricted area in the Strait of Hormuz.

These incidents in the crucial waterway led to a spike in oil prices, with the international Brent crude benchmark surpassing $100 per barrel for the first time since July. The ongoing conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen has further heightened uncertainties in energy markets. The Houthis recently launched attacks on four cities in Saudi Arabia, resulting in significant damage to oil installations and injuries to dozens of individuals.

The surge in oil prices has impacted consumers, with gasoline prices in the U.S. averaging $4.15 per gallon, marking a 26% increase from the previous year. Diesel prices also rose to $5.90 per gallon, reflecting a 59% year-over-year jump.

Amidst the escalating tensions, the possibility of a lasting agreement before the U.S. midterm elections appears increasingly unlikely. Canada has also witnessed a rise in gas prices since the conflict began, prompting the government to extend the gas tax holiday until the end of January.

Iran revealed plans to establish a maritime restricted zone extending from Chabahar in Iran into parts of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Meanwhile, a drone reportedly struck a tanker carrying Iraqi fuel oil in Iraqi waters, causing a fire on board but no casualties among the crew.

The conflict has disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil transportation. While the U.S. has implemented a blockade on Iranian ports, attempts to guide tankers through the strait have faced challenges. Iran’s threats against oil tankers in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports have added to the tensions in the region.

The military actions and retaliations between the U.S. and Iran have raised concerns about the escalation of the conflict. Both sides have engaged in strikes on naval vessels and military installations, with the situation remaining volatile in the region.
