The Israeli government has issued a warning to Hamas, stating that they will intensify “targeted strikes” on Gaza if Hamas does not stop the use of kites by Palestinians, including children, that are being flown towards Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on social media platform X, mentioned that he and Defence Minister Israel Katz conducted a “situational assessment” to address the threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites launched from Gaza towards Israel. The meeting included Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the head of the National Security Council, and senior officials from the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).
Netanyahu emphasized that unless the launches are halted immediately, Israel will escalate targeted strikes against those responsible for the launches and evacuate civilians from areas used as launch sites for kites, drones, and balloons. He asserted that Israel will not tolerate any threats from Hamas or any other group in Gaza that jeopardize the safety of Israeli communities.
Meanwhile, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, 13-year-old Omar Halawa finds solace in flying kites by the shore in Khan Younis. He expressed that flying kites brings some happiness in the midst of despair in Gaza and emphasized that they are not engaging in violent activities but simply seeking a sense of normalcy.
Prior to the recent escalation, Israeli officials reported incidents of burning kites and balloons sent from Gaza causing fires and damage. Despite the warnings issued, no hazardous materials were found attached to the kites discovered near Gaza.
Netanyahu’s announcement coincided with Israeli strikes that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two children, in various locations in Gaza. The aftermath of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and subsequent retaliatory measures have led to significant casualties on both sides.
Hamas responded to Netanyahu’s statements by accusing Israel of planning further aggression and disregarding international laws. The group called for condemnation of Israeli actions and urged mediators to push for a genuine ceasefire in Gaza.
Omar expressed fear about flying kites due to the risks involved, reflecting the heightened tensions and insecurity faced by children in Gaza. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, highlighted the impact of the conflict on children’s lives and expressed concerns about potential restrictions on their activities for security reasons. Despite the challenges, the children continued flying kites near their tents as the day came to an end.
