Police are currently looking into a suspected arson attack at the residence of a Member of Parliament in Scarborough. The MP confirmed that two cars were set on fire outside her home by an “individual.” Fortunately, there was no damage to the house, and everyone in the family is safe. The MP declined to speculate on the motive behind the incident and is awaiting the results of the investigation.
The MP addressed the media outside her residence, describing the event as “very traumatizing” for her family. She expressed concerns for their safety and decided to close her constituency office for the day.
According to Toronto police, three cars were damaged in a fire incident in the vicinity of Bellamy Road N. and Lawrence Avenue E. around 1:20 a.m. However, they have not confirmed any direct link to the MP. Police are actively seeking video footage and witnesses to aid in their investigation.
A neighbor, Victoria Konstantellos, recounted hearing what seemed like an explosion and witnessing flames on the front lawn of the MP’s home. Another individual, Nandkumar Chava, a tenant of the MP, shared security camera footage with CBC News showing a person pouring gasoline on the vehicles before setting them ablaze and fleeing the scene.
The suspect is described as slim-built, wearing a black mask, a hooded sweater, gloves, and running shoes with light socks. He was last seen driving a black Hyundai sedan, according to police reports.
In response to the incident, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed relief that the MP and her family are safe, condemning the act as “unacceptable.” Other political figures and community leaders have also voiced their support for the MP and called for the apprehension of the perpetrator.
