Celebrated actor and advocate for Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox, expressed feelings of “pride” and “humility” upon being honored with a promotion to the companion level of the Order of Canada at Rideau Hall. The audience rose to their feet to applaud Fox as Governor General Louise Arbour bestowed the prestigious title in recognition of his impactful global advocacy and candidness about Parkinson’s disease.
Reflecting on the ceremony, Fox shared his deep connection to Canada, attributing his love for the country, its values, and its progress to his upbringing. He emphasized his appreciation for Canadian culture and music, noting his unique Canadian identity shaped by these influences.
Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological condition characterized by tremors and stiffness, has been a focal point for Fox since publicly disclosing his diagnosis in 1998. Through fundraising efforts and sharing personal experiences, he has been a prominent voice in raising awareness and supporting research initiatives for the disease, highlighting advancements in Parkinson’s research in Canada.
The Order of Canada also recognized 50 other individuals alongside Fox for their outstanding contributions, including academics, artists, and public figures. Governor General Arbour commended the honorees for their commitment to using their talents and influence to benefit others and improve their communities.
Noteworthy figures inducted into the Order of Canada during the ceremony included mechanical engineering professor Yusuf Altintas, pediatric neuro-oncology expert Nada Jabado, former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz, sculptor Ruth Elsie Abernethy, investigative journalist Susanne Craig, music program founder Colin Roswell Clarke, Quebec playwright Marcelle Dubois, and submersibles expert Patrick Joseph Lahey. Each recipient was recognized for their exceptional achievements and contributions to their respective fields.
In her closing remarks, Arbour praised Fox as a shining example of dedication to progress and community improvement, acknowledging his resilience and courage in the face of challenges. The ceremony also paid tribute to Fox’s iconic roles in the “Back to the Future” movies, symbolizing his enduring impact on popular culture.
