“Social Justice Advocate Marie Burge Passes at 88”

Marie Burge, a lifelong advocate for social justice causes on Prince Edward Island, passed away at the age of 88 in Charlottetown. In 1984, she co-founded the Cooper Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to research, education, and community development. Joe Byrne, a close associate of Burge, praised her ability to inspire others to think differently and take on new challenges.

Before her involvement with the Cooper Institute, Burge was actively engaged in various community initiatives. She served with the Sisters of St. Martha and taught at Kinkora High School. Burge also spent time in the Dominican Republic as part of the Latin American Mission Program, where she and a colleague saved a young man from execution during a time of political turmoil.

Mary Murphy, a fellow member of the Sisters of St. Martha, noted that Burge returned from her mission work with a renewed passion for assisting marginalized communities. Throughout her life, Burge advocated for causes such as fair wages, land protection, and water conservation. She was a strong supporter of implementing a basic income guarantee on the island.

Burge received several awards for her dedication, including the Order of P.E.I. and various medals from the British monarchy. She played a key role in organizations like the Coalition for the Protection of P.E.I. Lands and the National Farmers Union. Additionally, she was involved with the P.E.I. Working Group for a Livable Income.

Described as constantly cheerful, humble, and forward-thinking, Burge’s impact extended beyond her professional endeavors. Her legacy continues to inspire others to strive for positive change in their communities. The New Democratic Party of P.E.I. paid tribute to Burge, acknowledging her unwavering commitment to social justice and her profound influence on the island’s progress.
