Brooke Henderson is in contention at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton, with room to make a move up the leaderboard. The defending champion from Smiths Falls, Ontario, aiming for her third victory at Canada’s LPGA event, posted a solid second-round score of 68 on Friday, placing her at 5-under par. Heading into the final two rounds, Henderson trails the current leader, Soo Bin Joo of South Korea, by four strokes, as Joo sits at 9 under at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton.
Henderson was at 7 under until she encountered some challenges on the back nine, resulting in a couple of bogeys. During one of her tee shots, she inadvertently hit a spectator after the ball veered left. Henderson promptly apologized to the woman and offered her a golf ball as a gesture of goodwill.
Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, who was the top amateur at last year’s tournament in Mississauga, finished her round strongly with consecutive birdies, carding a 67 to reach 3 under for the event.
The cut line at the $2.75-million US tournament is set at the top 65 players and ties. Canadian teenagers Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, both started the day at 5 under, just three shots off the lead, and had afternoon tee times to continue their pursuit of success on the course.
