Canada’s Marco Arop Places Fourth in Diamond League 800m

Date:

Canada’s runner Marco Arop placed fourth on Friday at the Diamond League athletics meet in Lausanne, Switzerland, held at Stade Olympique de la Pontaise. Arop started strongly, leading the pack into the final lap but couldn’t sustain the speed, finishing fourth with a time of 1:43.18. The victory went to Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi in 1:42.19, with Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati securing second place in a season-best time of 1:42.31. American Brandon Miller claimed the third spot with a time of 1:42.55.

In the previous year, Arop and shot putter Sarah Mitton were the sole Canadians qualifying for the Diamond League Final in Zurich, where they both finished third. Arop, currently second in the men’s 800m Diamond League standings behind Emmanuel Wanyonyi, is on track to secure his spot in the Final based on his ranking. The 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final is scheduled for September 4–5 in Brussels, Belgium.

In the men’s 200m race, Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo of Botswana dominated, crossing the finish line in 19.87 seconds. South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile took second place in 19.98, followed by Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba in third with a time of 20.14.

American athlete Kayla White emerged victorious in the women’s 200m event, clocking 22.18 seconds. Great Britain’s Amy Hunt narrowly edged Nigeria’s Favour Ofili for second place, both finishing in 22.32 seconds. Unfortunately, Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, a two-time women’s world champion, suffered an injury during the race and had to be removed from the track in a wheelchair.
