Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently discussed her latest book, “Gruffalo Granny,” in an interview. Donaldson initially had doubts about the success of her book “The Gruffalo” due to its dark themes and use of rhymes, which were not popular at the time. However, 26 years later, “Gruffalo Granny” has become a hit, marking the third and likely final installment in the series.
In “Gruffalo Granny,” readers follow the original Gruffalo and his child as they prepare a feast for the arrival of Gruffalo Granny, known for her enormous appetite. Despite the success of her books, Donaldson remains focused on crafting quality stories rather than catering to specific audiences.
The release of “Gruffalo Granny” has garnered significant attention, with the book becoming the highest-selling book in the UK in 2026, across all genres and age groups. The quick success of the book highlights the enduring appeal of Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler’s work.
Looking ahead, Donaldson plans to release a new book titled “Winnifred Duck,” based on the true story of rubber ducks lost at sea and their journey across oceans. While she believes her time with the Gruffalo series has come to a close, Donaldson’s career as a children’s writer continues to thrive.
The remarkable success of “Gruffalo Granny” reflects the timeless charm of Donaldson’s storytelling and the beloved characters she has created.
